It’s National Puppy Day!
In honor of Dock and all the Dog Lovers out there, I appropriately wore this ” I love my Dog ” Tee from Hope Ignite. I have been holding off for THIS. VERY. DAY! This company designs shirts for a great cause.. or causes!
( Don’t worry Cat Lovers, they have one for you too! )
Dogs are a huge commitment. Personally, I have loved every minute of being a Dog Mom! There’s a lot of things that go into caring for a dog. They demand attention and love. A dog is like having a toddler. Dogs are such a great addition to families. There’s some things to consider before you bring them into your family!
Having a dog has taught me a lot! A little back story with my puppers. A little over a year ago, someone posted how good the documentary, “Champions” was. If you haven’t heard of it.. watch the trailer –> here then, go check it out on netflix. It’s about Michael Vick’s Pitbulls and dog fighting ring. So, I watched it. It didn’t let me down. As a matter of fact, it triggered me to research pitbulls. According to the documentary, they are sweet, gentle, and loving. To speak of them as a whole they are cuddling, high energy, and overall happy dogs. The following weekend I stumbled upon an abandoned Pitbull. He lives up to their claims. But, there were some things I had forgotten about or maybe overlooked while the excitement of finding this dog had overtaken me! So, Here’s 15 (+ 20 More) Things to Consider Before Getting a Dog!
15 Things to Consider Before Getting a Dog
1. You’ll probably have to pick up poop..
More times than you’d like to recall, you’ll pick up poop. Accidents happen. Even though Dock is house broken sometimes he gets sick..
What you have looks tasty; drool. He’s hot; drool. His mouth is open; drool. Drool everywhere. Even if they aren’t heavy droolers there will still be drool.
They have to go outside. Fleas are just part of it. Flea pills are worth their weight in gold. Just bite the bullet. Once a month. You won’t regret it.
4. That pair of shoes you like.. they’ll probably get chewed up
Countless things destroyed at the hands (mouth) of my dog. Shoes, purse straps, pillows, toys, TENNIS BALLS! Everything can be eaten and possibly will.
5. Dogs don’t talk.
When they’re whiny for 20 minutes straight and you can’t seem to figure it out you result to trial and error.. and poking your eyes out. Until you realize their favorite toy is out of their reach and they want it now. But, he could;t tell me that because he can’t talk.. They also don’t talk back…
6. It doesn’t matter the weather they still have to go outside
If you don’t want to revisit number one, you’ll endure rain or shine, hot or cold. And yes, sometimes it’s miserable when the wind chill factor is -20 and your dog takes this opportunity to smell every blade of grass in your yard.
7. You’re going to be licked A LOT
They’re just showing affection.. or you have food on your face. I don’t know if my dog likes the taste of my makeup but he never fails me. Freshly applied makeup.. on giant lick up the side of my face. He would lick me for hours if I’d let him.
Also, they lick their butt then your face. They drink from the toilet then lick your face..
8. That food on the counter.. they can reach it
Few things are out of reach. If it smells good or looks fun they’ll get it. Where there’s a will theres DEFINITELY a way and they’ll find it.
Dog Mom Story:
My mom made brisket shortly after I rescued Dock. Generally, he’s my little shadow. not this day. I put some brisket on my plate and my mom called me into the living room. When I came back I momentarily thought I was going crazy until I see Dock standing their licking the floor.
9. They prefer your bed to theirs
AND they take up the whole bed..
Can you blame them? No one likes sleeping on the floor. Dock has never slept on the floor. From the time I brought him home he slept in bed with me. It’s a joke if someone suggests him sleeping in his own bed. I literally laugh at that suggestion.
10. Dog hair. Everywhere.
It’s part of your wardrobe, your bedding and your carpet now. It’s all over my jeep too. No matter how many times I vacuum ( which don’t get confused, thats not often ) there’s still little dog hair on the seats of my jeep.
11. No more personal space
What bubble? On top of me, beside me, underneath me. The closer the better. And if you don’t let the dog in your space he will force himself into your space and you will end up welcoming the dog into your space anyway!
12. I hope you like the sound of your own voice because you’ll hear it a lot
“No. No. Dock. No. Down. Quit. Stop. What are you eating? Where did you get that? Get back. Stay. No. Stay. Wait. Dock? Dock! Hey!!”
13. Alone time is nonexistent
Even in the shower there’s a visible black nose poking in and out of the shower curtain. and just forget going to the bathroom alone. You either close the door and listen to them whine or you don’t close the door and they come in there with the happiest look on their faces wondering what you’re doing. You choose.
14. White pants and dirty paws don’t mix
Paw prints are just a fashion accessory at this point. Anything light colored I have must be put on after Dock has had enough time to get the dirt off his paws..
15. Dirty paws and anything don’t mix
My bedding looks filthy. There’s paw prints on my jeep seat. The rug in my room is a dingy beige.
20 More Things to Consider Before Getting a Dog
The good always outweighs the bad. It doesn’t matter how mad I am at Dock or how much trouble he’s been in I can’t stay mad or stick to my guns. He’s ornery and sassy. He has so much personality and loves to show it off. All the good completely outweighs any of the bad..
PS How Cute is the Dog!?
( I may have bribed him to look at me by holding his tennis ball. and by “I may have” I really mean I did! )
1. Endless snuggles
You always have someone who wants to snuggle. And lately, he discovered how toasty it is under the covers while we’re sleeping. He gets under the covers and snuggles me all night long.
2. You’re never alone
There’s always someone there to keep you company. And he doesn’t judge you for all the weird stuff you do while you’re alone and he doesn’t judge you for talking to yourself.. I mean to him.
3. You connect on a different level because they don’t talk
They see all your different moods and emotions. They sense things other people can’t. You expose them emotions you don’t show other people. They understand you on a different level.
If I’m upset Dock always knows and wants to lick my face or snuggle me. Even when I’m sick he just lays around with me.
4. Unconditional love
It doesn’t matter how mad you get they still love you. It’s hard to punish him when he just wants pets. Even if I have gotten onto Dock he still wants to love on me! Like his form of an apology.
5. Door greeter
Always, Always, Always so happy to see you. Whether it’s been 5 minutes or 5 days. Whether you were petting him and sweet when you left him or if he was in trouble. He’s still excited to see you!
6. Outside time is good for the heart.
Even in the rain and cold, fresh air is good for your lungs.. and your soul. It’s good for you and them to get outside and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. When Dock gets outside its like the first time grass ever touched his paws he goes NUTS!!
7. Alarm System and Security Guard
Their hearing is impeccable and they can be intimidating. You get a warning bark and possibly a security growl. They sense things you don’t and hear things we don’t. Also, they recognize familiar vehicles so know when someone unfamiliar is there!
8. Heating Blanket
Keeping you warm through the night. See number 1. They also like your bed better so they take care of you on the cold nights.
9. Travel companion
Car rides are made less boring by having someone to pet. Dogs love car rides. It’s good for them to get out and about.
10. They help with anxiety and depression
11. Exercise Partner
Not that I exercise but I’ve chased my dog several times. If he needs a walk, I get to burn some calories.
12. They give you a purpose
Watch pitbulls and parolees if you don’t believe me. Even on days that I don’t feel right Dock still gets me up and going.
13. They teach you compassion, responsibility, discipline, and contentment
Having a dog as an adult has taught me so much more than any dog I had growing up. He depends solely on me to feed him, love him, and care for him. Only I care about him being warm, having shelter, and being safe. ( and Nate cares too but you get the point )
13. They don’t complain about their clothes.
They can’t. So, put that sweater on him!
14. They don’t tattle on you for weird stuff you do alone
First of all, they don’t know it’s weird. Secondly, they can’t tell anyone what you’re doing anyway. Kids on the other hand…
15. They brighten your day
Door greeter, unconditional love, snuggles, warmth.. the list goes on. They make the days better.
16. Unlike children, you can leave them at home.
No daycare cost for this dog mom.. no diaper cost either.
17. You don’t have to share your chocolate.
They can’t have it. It’s all yours.
18. Their toys are cheap.
Tennis Balls are cheaper than a hatchmal….
19. You sleep better when you sleep with a dog
Also a proven fact. Since they calm anxiety and even out your breathing they make you sleep better. Or so I’m told..
20. They’re just so, so stinking cute.
No explanation needed.
